Let Me Go Instead
When your name is on it, people keep up appearances, and the authenticity is gone.
You have seen it. The price goes up the moment the seller knows who is buying. The meeting turns formal the second your title walks in. People smile, nod and tell you what they think you want to hear.
So let me go instead, as your principal's proxy.
Why send me
Your name changes things. A question from you becomes an official request. Interest from you becomes a reason to raise the price.
You get the real answer. People tell someone from outside things they would never tell the boss.
You do not have to be in the room. Maybe you cannot be there. Maybe you do not want to be. Maybe it is too awkward or too emotional to do yourself. Any of those is reason enough.
Where this comes up
- Finding out what is really happening on the ground, at a project, a branch or a business you own, before you decide what to do about it
- Getting an honest read on a partner, supplier or deal before you commit
- Going to a meeting on your behalf
- Having a hard conversation you would rather not have yourself
What I do in the room
I get in and learn everything I can. Every assignment is different, so we agree on what you need before I go. Then I come back and tell you what I found.
My rules
- I always say I am acting for someone. Who that is stays private unless you want it known.
- I never lie about who I am.
- I will not approach anyone who has said no.
- I bring back what I learn, good or bad.
Things people ask
Will they know it is me?
Not unless you want them to. They will know I am representing someone, and that is all.
Who is this for?
Whoever needs it: founders, executives, families, and people abroad who need someone on the ground.
Is this confidential?
From the very first message. I am happy to sign an NDA before you tell me anything.
